A six-panel folding screen featuring the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, rendered in ink and gold leaf by Unkoku Tōeki.
This six-panel folding screen by Unkoku Tōeki presents a classic iteration of the Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers, a theme with deep roots in East Asian ink painting. Tōeki, a member of the Unkoku school, followed the stylistic lineage of Sesshū Tōyō, prioritising the expressive potential of ink wash techniques. The composition balances atmospheric depth with the decorative application of gold leaf, a hallmark of the Momoyama period.
The work employs a restricted palette, where the muted grey tones of the ink suggest mist, distance, and the quietude of a winter scene. The gold leaf, applied in textured, block-like sections, creates a stark contrast against the ink-brushed mountains and gnarled trees. This juxtaposition of ethereal, washed areas and solid, reflective surfaces guides the eye across the panels. The architecture, rendered with precise, thin lines, provides a sense of human presence within the vast, quiet environment.
Unkoku Tōeki captures the essence of the subject through simplified forms and controlled brushwork. The trees, depicted with calligraphic strokes, add a sense of age and resilience to the scene. The screen functions as both a window into a distant, idealised geography and a physical object that interacts with the light of a room. By omitting unnecessary detail, the artist allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the solid gold foreground and the receding, misty background. This piece demonstrates the technical skill of the Unkoku school in adapting traditional Chinese themes to the aesthetic preferences of the Japanese elite during the early seventeenth century.
