A detailed etching by Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk featuring two animal studies, including a cow standing in water and an inverted sheep.
This etching by Wouter Johannes van Troostwijk presents two distinct animal studies on a single plate. The upper section features a sheep oriented towards the right, depicted in an inverted position. Below this, a cow stands in shallow water, rendered with careful attention to the texture of its hide and the weight of its form. Van Troostwijk, a Dutch artist active during the early nineteenth century, frequently turned his attention to the rural subjects of the Netherlands. His work often reflects a direct observation of nature, prioritising the physical presence of his subjects over idealised compositions.
The etching technique allows for fine, precise lines that define the musculature of the cow and the woolly coat of the sheep. The artist uses cross-hatching to build shadow and volume, particularly in the lower study of the cow. The inclusion of the inverted sheep suggests this plate may have functioned as a practice sheet or a collection of sketches intended for reference. Such studies were common among artists of the period who sought to capture the anatomy of livestock with accuracy. The simplicity of the background ensures that the focus remains entirely on the animals themselves. This print offers a glimpse into the working methods of a Dutch artist whose career was cut short at a young age. It remains a clear example of the technical skill involved in early nineteenth-century printmaking, where the artist balanced observational rigour with the limitations of the copper plate. The work is devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the clarity of the line and the anatomical fidelity of the subjects to convey its intent.
