The scene depicts a quiet, domestic setting in Scutari, a district on the Asian side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul. Lewis captures the atmosphere of a semi-open dwelling, where the boundary between the interior living space and the exterior courtyard is fluid. The composition is divided into distinct zones. On the left, a man reclines on a raised platform, surrounded by ceramics and textiles, while a cat rests nearby.
