A direct and intimate self-portrait by the Italian Baroque master Gian Lorenzo Bernini, capturing the artist in his early twenties with characteristic intensity.
This portrait captures Gian Lorenzo Bernini during his early twenties, a period when his reputation as a sculptor in Rome was already established. Unlike his later, more dramatic works in marble, this painting offers a direct and unadorned view of the artist. The composition focuses on the face, which is illuminated against a dark, neutral background. This technique, often associated with the influence of Caravaggio, directs the viewer's attention to the intensity of the artist's gaze.
Bernini depicts himself with a slight turn of the head, creating a sense of immediate presence. His expression is alert, with wide eyes and a firm mouth, suggesting the confidence of a young man aware of his own capabilities. The brushwork is economical, prioritising the play of light across the skin and the texture of the hair over fine detail. The white collar provides a sharp contrast to the dark clothing and the shadowed backdrop, framing the face effectively.
While Bernini is primarily known for his sculpture and architectural projects, his forays into painting reveal a keen understanding of light and psychological depth. This work is a study in character, showing the artist at a time when he was beginning to secure the patronage of the papal court. It remains a rare example of his personal artistic output, providing a glimpse into the personality of the man who would go on to define the visual language of the Roman Baroque. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Galleria Borghese in Rome, where it sits alongside many of his most famous sculptural commissions.
