A detailed 1758 self-portrait etching by German artist Georg Friedrich Schmidt, showing the printmaker at his desk in Saint Petersburg.
This etching, executed by Georg Friedrich Schmidt in 1758, captures the artist during his period of residence in Saint Petersburg. Schmidt, a highly skilled printmaker, presents himself in a domestic setting, seated at a desk with a pen in hand. The composition is dense with symbolic objects: a violin hangs on the wall, a bottle and glass sit near the window, and a spider web is visible against the windowpane. These elements suggest a life balanced between artistic pursuit and quiet contemplation.
The technical execution demonstrates Schmidt's mastery of the etching needle and burin. He employs a wide range of tonal values, from the deep shadows of his coat to the delicate, light-filled textures of the paper and the window view. The cross-hatching is precise, creating a sense of volume and physical presence. His gaze is directed away from his work, towards the viewer, suggesting a moment of pause in his creative process. The inscription at the bottom confirms the location of the work as Petropolis, or Saint Petersburg, where he served as the court engraver to the Russian Empress Elizabeth.
Schmidt was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of other masters into the medium of print, yet in this self-portrait, he relies on his own observational skills. The work provides a glimpse into the life of an eighteenth-century artist working far from his native Berlin. The inclusion of the spider web is a curious detail, often interpreted in art history as a sign of time passing or the quietude of the studio environment. This print remains a fine example of mid-eighteenth-century portraiture, showing the artist's command over light, texture, and characterisation.
