Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, created this self-portrait during the early twentieth century. Working primarily on oilcloth, a material often used for tavern signage in Tiflis, Pirosmani developed a distinct visual language characterised by flat planes of colour and a direct, unadorned approach to his subjects. His work exists outside the formal academic traditions of his time, aligning instead with the sensibilities of folk art and the raw, immediate expression of the Naïve movement.

In this portrait, the artist presents himself with a steady gaze. The composition is minimal, focusing entirely on the facial features and the traditional attire. The use of oilcloth as a substrate contributes to the specific texture of the work, as the paint sits upon the surface rather than soaking into a woven canvas.
