A sun-drenched scene of rural Italian life by Henry Herbert La Thangue, capturing a young woman carrying chickens along a cobblestone path.
Henry Herbert La Thangue was a prominent member of the Newlyn School, a group of British artists who adopted the French practice of painting en plein air. This work, produced during his time in Italy, captures a quiet moment of rural life in the Ligurian region. The composition focuses on a young woman carrying two chickens, her figure rendered in a simple white dress that catches the bright Mediterranean light.
La Thangue employs a technique characterised by broken brushwork and a high-key palette, which allows him to replicate the intense, dappled sunlight filtering through the overhead vines. The cobblestone path and the rustic architecture of the building behind her provide a sense of place, grounding the scene in the everyday reality of the Italian countryside. In the background, a man attends to a cart, adding a narrative layer to the composition without distracting from the primary subject.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on dramatic social commentary, La Thangue preferred to observe the rhythms of agricultural life with a detached, painterly eye. His interest lies in the interplay of light and shadow across the textures of the stone wall, the fabric of the girl's clothing, and the feathers of the birds. The painting reflects the artist's transition from the cooler tones of his earlier Cornish works to the warmer, more luminous atmosphere of his later travels. This piece remains a representative example of his ability to combine academic training with the observational rigour of the naturalist movement, resulting in a scene that feels both immediate and timeless.
