A powerful expressionist etching from 1925, depicting the final moments of the protagonist from Büchner's Wozzeck through gestural, calligraphic lines.
This etching is part of a series created by Walter Gramatté in 1925, inspired by Georg Büchner’s play Wozzeck. The work captures the final, tragic moments of the protagonist as he succumbs to the water. Gramatté employs a highly gestural approach, using calligraphic lines to suggest the turbulent movement of the pond and the dissolution of the figure within it. The composition avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, rhythmic arrangement of marks that convey psychological distress rather than literal representation.
The print demonstrates the artist's engagement with the themes of alienation and existential despair common to the German Expressionist movement. The lines are etched with a sense of urgency, creating a visual tension between the dark, heavy strokes of the water and the lighter, more abstract forms that suggest the drowning man. The plate tone remains subtle, allowing the stark contrast of the ink against the paper to dominate the viewer's experience. Gramatté’s technique here is characteristic of his broader graphic output, where he prioritised emotional resonance over anatomical precision.
As a piece of twentieth-century printmaking, this work offers a glimpse into the period's fascination with the darker aspects of the human condition. The artist’s signature and the plate number are visible in the lower margin, providing a clear link to the original portfolio. The work is a study in how line and form can communicate narrative weight without the need for complex detail. It remains a stark example of the expressive power inherent in the medium of etching, particularly when utilised to interpret literary tragedy.
