A poignant watercolour by Eric Ravilious depicting a coastal scene illuminated by an explosion during the Second World War.
Eric Ravilious produced this work during his tenure as an official war artist. It depicts a coastal scene under the duress of conflict, capturing the stark reality of the Second World War through his characteristic use of watercolour. The composition is dominated by the dramatic, luminous flare of an explosion against the dark, muted tones of the night sky and the English coastline.
Ravilious employs a precise, controlled technique. The cross-hatching and layered washes create a sense of texture on the cliffs and the sea, while the architectural forms of the town remain grounded despite the atmospheric disturbance above. The perspective is elevated, offering a wide view of the harbour and the distant piers, which are rendered with a quiet, observational clarity. This approach avoids overt sentimentality, focusing instead on the visual mechanics of the scene.
The palette is largely restricted to greys, ochres, and deep greens, which allows the brilliant white and yellow of the flare to command attention. This contrast between the stillness of the landscape and the sudden, violent light of the shelling is a hallmark of his wartime output. Ravilious was known for his ability to integrate human-made structures into the natural environment, and here, the town appears vulnerable yet persistent against the backdrop of military action. The work provides a clear record of the period, reflecting the artist's keen eye for detail and his mastery of the watercolour medium in documenting the coastal defences of Britain during the early 1940s.
