A portrait of the medieval Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli, painted by the self-taught artist Niko Pirosmani on oilcloth.
Niko Pirosmani, a self-taught Georgian painter, created this portrait of the medieval poet Shota Rustaveli during the final years of his life. Pirosmani often painted on black oilcloth, a material that allowed the dark background to remain visible, providing a distinct depth to his compositions. In this work, the poet is depicted in a seated position, engaged in the act of writing with a quill. The figure wears traditional Georgian attire, including a fur-lined cloak and bright yellow boots, which contrast against the sombre, dark surroundings.
The composition is characteristic of Pirosmani's approach, which prioritises clear, frontal figures and simplified forms over academic perspective. The artist focuses on the essential elements of the subject, such as the quill, the manuscript, and the inkwell, to convey the identity of the poet. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the interplay between the dark background and the warmer tones of the clothing and paper. The texture of the oilcloth is evident in the surface of the painting, a common feature of Pirosmani's output.
Pirosmani worked largely in isolation in Tbilisi, producing signs for taverns and portraits of historical or local figures. His work was later recognised for its directness and emotional clarity. This portrait of Rustaveli, the author of the national epic 'The Knight in the Panther's Skin', reflects the artist's interest in Georgian cultural history. The painting remains a primary example of his ability to capture the dignity of his subjects through a simplified, direct visual language. The work is currently held in the collection of the Georgian National Museum, where it is studied for its contribution to early twentieth-century folk-inspired art.
