An etching by Edgar Degas, 'Singer in Profile with Four Gas Lamps' depicts a singer illuminated by gaslight. The monochromatic print showcases Degas's skill in capturing fleeting moments of modern life.
This etching by Edgar Degas (1834-1917) captures a singer in profile, illuminated by the glow of four gas lamps. The composition is stark, with the singer's face and upper body rendered in delicate lines against a dark background. The gas lamps, depicted as glowing orbs, provide the only source of light, casting shadows and creating a sense of drama. Degas was a French artist celebrated for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is particularly identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. He also painted portraits and scenes of modern life. Degas was a founder of Impressionism, although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. His compositions often feature unusual angles and perspectives, influenced by Japanese prints and photography. He was a master of drawing, and his works are characterised by their precise lines and attention to detail. This etching demonstrates his skill as a printmaker, and his ability to capture the fleeting moments of modern life. The print's monochromatic palette adds to its sense of intimacy and immediacy, inviting the viewer to contemplate the singer's expression and the atmosphere of the scene.
