Description
A 1970 screenprint by Patrick Heron, exploring the dynamic interaction of warm colours and organic abstract forms.
Patrick Heron was a central figure in the development of British abstract art during the mid-twentieth century. This screenprint, produced in 1970, demonstrates his preoccupation with the interaction of colour and form. Heron moved away from representational subjects to explore how flat areas of pigment could create spatial tension on a two-dimensional surface. In this composition, the artist employs a limited palette of warm tones. The interplay between the red, orange, and yellow shapes creates a sense of movement, as the forms appear to expand or contract against one another. Heron often spoke of his desire to make the colour itself the subject of the work, rather than a tool to describe an object. By removing traditional perspective, he forces the viewer to engage directly with the physical presence of the ink on the paper. Heron spent much of his career in Cornwall, where the quality of light influenced his approach to colour. His work from this period is characterised by organic, amoeba-like shapes that avoid rigid geometry. The edges of these forms are soft, allowing them to bleed into the surrounding space. This print reflects his mature style, where the balance of weight and hue is calculated to achieve a specific optical effect. The lack of a central focus encourages the eye to travel across the entire surface, observing how the different intensities of red and yellow shift in relation to the background. This piece is a clear example of his technical control over the screenprinting process, ensuring that each block of colour remains flat and uniform, which was necessary to achieve the desired visual impact.
