A detailed etching by Jean Augustin Daiwaille depicting the Battle of Waterloo, capturing the movement and scale of the historic conflict through fine, precise lines.
This etching by Jean Augustin Daiwaille depicts the aftermath and activity surrounding the Battle of Waterloo. As a Dutch artist known for his portraiture and lithographic work, Daiwaille here employs a delicate, linear style to capture the chaotic scene of the battlefield. The composition is crowded with figures, including mounted officers, infantry, and fallen soldiers, reflecting the scale of the conflict that concluded the Napoleonic Wars.
The artist uses fine, precise lines to define the uniforms and the anatomy of the horses, typical of the etching techniques favoured in the early nineteenth century. The scene is not a singular heroic portrait but a collective representation of the military engagement. The figures are arranged across the foreground and middle ground, with the horizon kept relatively clear to focus attention on the immediate human cost and the movement of the troops.
Daiwaille, who was active in Amsterdam and later Brussels, often engaged with the historical subjects that occupied the European imagination during this period. This print provides a clear view of the military attire and equipment of the era, serving as a document of the period's aesthetic and historical interests. The work is characterised by its restraint, avoiding the dramatic chiaroscuro often found in later oil paintings of the same subject, and instead relying on the clarity of the etched line to communicate the complexity of the battlefield. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the print, making it a suitable piece for those interested in military history or the technical development of nineteenth-century printmaking.
