Painted in 1777, George Stubbs's *Sleeping Leopard* showcases the artist's anatomical precision and skill in animal portraiture. The leopard's form is rendered with careful attention to detail, capturing its texture and musculature.
George Stubbs, an 18th-century British painter, is celebrated for his anatomical accuracy and naturalistic depictions of animals, particularly horses. His meticulous approach involved detailed anatomical studies, including dissections, to achieve a scientific understanding of animal form. This dedication is evident in his celebrated publication, *The Anatomy of the Horse* (1766). Stubbs's work bridged the gap between scientific illustration and fine art, appealing to both aristocratic patrons and the scientific community. He also experimented with printmaking and enamel painting. *Sleeping Leopard*, painted in 1777, exemplifies Stubbs's skill in animal portraiture. The composition, presented in an oval format, features a leopard curled up in repose. The animal's coat, rendered in shades of tan and brown with dark spots, contrasts with the dark background. The leopard rests on a rocky surface, with foliage adding a touch of naturalism to the scene. The painting captures the animal's form with precision, showcasing Stubbs's anatomical knowledge and his ability to convey the texture and musculature of the leopard.
