A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Paulus Pontius, based on a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the classical Greek playwright Sophocles.
This engraving by Paulus Pontius depicts the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles. The work is based on a drawing by Peter Paul Rubens, who drew inspiration from classical antique busts. Pontius, a highly skilled printmaker within the Rubens circle, employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to translate the sculptural qualities of the original bust into a two-dimensional medium.
The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, focusing on the weathered features and the heavy, rhythmic curls of the beard and hair. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume, giving the figure a tangible presence. The inscription at the base, 'SOPHOCLES SOPHILI. F. ATHENIENSIS', identifies the subject, while the Latin text notes the source of the design, 'P.P. Rubens delin.' (drawn by Peter Paul Rubens) and 'P. Pontius sculpsit' (engraved by Paulus Pontius). The date 1638 is also recorded on the plate.
Pontius was instrumental in disseminating the compositions of Rubens through his precise engraving technique. This print demonstrates his ability to mimic the textures of stone and fabric, reflecting the technical standards of seventeenth-century Flemish printmaking. The composition is austere, focusing entirely on the characterisation of the philosopher-poet. The dark, atmospheric background pushes the figure forward, ensuring the viewer's attention remains on the facial expression and the classical form. This piece is a fine example of the collaborative nature of the Rubens workshop, where the division of labour between the master draughtsman and the specialist engraver produced works of great technical clarity and historical interest.
