Description

Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) was a Scottish artist, known for his post-impressionist paintings and a founding member of the Scottish Colourists group. These artists, influenced by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism, sought to capture the essence of light and colour in their work. Peploe's still life paintings, in particular, demonstrate his interest in simplifying forms and using colour to create atmosphere. 'Souvenir' presents a collection of objects arranged on a dark surface. A silver pitcher, reflecting light, stands prominently in the foreground. Behind it, a stack of books and a framed painting create depth. The painting within the painting appears to depict a cloudy scene, rendered in muted tones.
