Description
A loose, atmospheric study of a Spanish tavern at night by the Russian Impressionist Konstantin Korovin.
Konstantin Korovin painted this scene following his travels to Spain in the late 1880s. The work depicts a group of figures gathered in a tavern or outdoor cafe under the glow of lanterns. Korovin was a leading figure in the Russian Impressionist movement. He used loose, rapid brushstrokes to capture the immediate sensation of light and movement rather than precise anatomical detail. The composition relies on a dark, earthy palette. Deep browns and greens dominate the background, while sudden bursts of orange and red indicate the presence of lamps and clothing. These patches of light create a sense of depth within the crowded space. The figures are rendered with minimal definition, appearing as shapes that merge with their surroundings. This technique emphasises the atmosphere of the evening over the individual identities of the subjects. Korovin often worked en plein air or from memory to maintain the freshness of his observations. In this piece, the application of paint is thick and visible. The texture of the oil paint adds a physical dimension to the surface. His approach reflects the influence of French Impressionism, which he encountered during his visits to Paris. However, his work retains a specific Russian character through its choice of colour and emotional weight. This painting is an example of Korovin's interest in theatricality and light. He later became a celebrated stage designer, and his ability to manipulate light and shadow is evident here. The contrast between the dark shadows and the warm artificial light defines the spatial arrangement of the tavern.
