A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, depicting optical instruments and their cases with delicate patterns and accompanying calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles. Shinsai was a prominent student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work frequently demonstrates a refined attention to material texture and precise composition.
The image presents a still life arrangement of optical instruments: a pair of spectacles, a telescope, and their respective containers. The artist employs a delicate line quality to render the objects, balancing the functional nature of the items with the aesthetic requirements of the surimono format. The telescope case features a repeating cloud-like pattern, while the smaller case is decorated with subtle cherry blossom motifs. The inclusion of calligraphy surrounding the objects suggests that the print was created to accompany a specific poem, integrating the visual and the literary.
Shinsai uses a restrained colour palette, allowing the viewer to focus on the forms and the quality of the paper. The composition is intentionally flat, typical of the period, yet it conveys a sense of depth through the overlapping placement of the items. This work provides a glimpse into the material culture of the Edo period, where scientific instruments were becoming objects of curiosity and status. The print reflects the technical mastery of the woodblock carvers and printers who collaborated with Shinsai, as evidenced by the fine details in the patterns and the subtle gradations of ink. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that invites close inspection of its individual components.
