A fresco by Benozzo Gozzoli, 'St. Fortunatus Enthroned' depicts the saint seated on a throne, holding a staff and book. The symmetrical composition and muted colours create a serene and reverent image.
This fresco by Benozzo Gozzoli depicts St. Fortunatus seated on a throne. Gozzoli, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, was a student of Fra Angelico and is known for his frescoes, particularly those in the Magi Chapel of the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence. His style is characterised by its attention to detail, use of bright colours, and narrative clarity. In this work, St. Fortunatus is shown wearing a rose-coloured robe with gold trim, holding a staff in his left hand and a book in his right. A golden halo surrounds his head, signifying his sainthood. The throne is set against a backdrop of blue and gold, with glimpses of a stylised landscape visible behind. Figures with raised hands appear on either side of the throne, possibly representing worshippers or attendants. The fresco's composition is symmetrical, with a focus on the central figure of the saint. The colours are muted, typical of frescoes that have aged over time, but the overall impression is one of serenity and reverence.
