A narrative scene by Vittore Carpaccio depicting the arrival of Saint Jerome and his lion at a monastery, causing the monks to flee in alarm.
Vittore Carpaccio, a Venetian master of the early Renaissance, painted this scene as part of a cycle for the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni. The composition depicts the legendary moment when Saint Jerome returns to his monastery accompanied by a lion he has tamed. The narrative unfolds within a courtyard, where the presence of the beast causes the resident monks to flee in panic, their robes billowing as they scramble for safety.
Carpaccio demonstrates his characteristic attention to architectural detail and spatial organisation. The background features buildings rendered with precise perspective, typical of the Venetian school, while the foreground is populated with figures whose gestures convey a sense of immediate, human reaction. The inclusion of various animals, such as a deer and a peacock, adds to the sense of a living, breathing environment. The palette is dominated by warm, earthy tones, which provide a sense of unity across the complex scene.
This work is a fine example of the narrative style that defined Carpaccio's career. He possessed a unique ability to blend religious subject matter with the everyday observations of Venetian life. The painting does not merely present a static icon; it invites the viewer to observe the unfolding drama of the monks' retreat. The clarity of the light and the careful placement of each figure contribute to a balanced composition that remains engaging to the modern eye. Through his mastery of oil on canvas, Carpaccio captures both the solemnity of the saint and the chaotic energy of the monastery, creating a scene that is as much about human behaviour as it is about hagiography.
