A striking woodcut by Hans Baldung depicting St. John the Baptist, showcasing the technical precision and expressive line work of the German Renaissance.
This woodcut by Hans Baldung, also known as Hans Baldung Grien, depicts St. John the Baptist in a seated position. The figure is rendered with the characteristic vigour of the German Renaissance. Baldung, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates his mastery of the woodcut medium through the precise, rhythmic hatching that defines the musculature of the saint and the texture of his animal-skin garment. The saint holds an open book in one hand, while his other arm cradles a lamb, the traditional symbol of his role as the precursor to Christ. A cross-staff rests against his shoulder, and a prominent halo radiates light behind his head, creating a sense of spiritual authority.
Baldung often explored themes of human mortality and religious fervour, and this print is no exception. The composition is tightly focused on the figure, who appears deep in contemplation. The artist's monogram, HB, is visible on a scroll at the bottom left, a common practice for printmakers of the period to assert authorship. The stark contrast between the black ink and the paper surface emphasises the dramatic quality of the scene. The lines are sharp and deliberate, reflecting the technical demands of carving into a woodblock. This piece offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of the early sixteenth-century German school, where technical precision met theological narrative. The work remains a fine example of the period's printmaking tradition, capturing the expressive power that Baldung brought to his religious subjects.
