A portrait of St. Stephen by Giotto, featuring the saint in detailed deacon's vestments against a traditional gold-leaf background.
This portrait of St. Stephen is a characteristic example of the work of Giotto di Bondone. Painted in tempera on a gold-leaf ground, the figure occupies a space defined by the arched top of the panel. St. Stephen is depicted in his traditional deacon's vestments, which are rendered with careful attention to the geometric patterns of the embroidery. He holds a book, a common attribute for the saint, with a steady hand.
Giotto moved away from the rigid, stylised conventions of Byzantine art that dominated the period. In this work, the saint possesses a tangible physical presence. The modelling of the face, particularly around the eyes and jawline, suggests a three-dimensional form that occupies actual space. The light source is consistent, casting soft shadows that define the contours of the face and the folds of the fabric.
The gold background, while traditional, does not flatten the figure entirely. Instead, it acts as a luminous field that draws attention to the saint. The decorative elements on the dalmatic show the artist's interest in textile patterns, which are integrated into the overall composition without disrupting the sense of volume. This piece reflects the shift toward humanism in Italian art, where religious figures are presented with a sense of gravity and individual character. The work is part of the polyptych from the Horne Museum in Florence, demonstrating the artist's ability to maintain clarity and focus within a larger devotional structure. The preservation of the original tempera surface allows for an appreciation of the fine brushwork and the subtle transitions in tone that define Giotto's approach to portraiture.
