A precise academic figure study in black chalk, depicting a standing male nude, awarded second prize in 1789.
This academic figure study by Jan Kamphuijsen, dated 1789, captures a standing male nude in a frontal pose. The work was produced as a competition entry, as indicated by the inscription 'Praemium Secundum' (Second Prize) in the upper left corner. Such drawings were central to the training of artists in the late eighteenth century, requiring a precise understanding of human anatomy, proportion, and the play of light across the musculature.
The figure is rendered with black chalk, allowing for subtle transitions between shadow and light. The artist employs hatching to define the contours of the torso, arms, and legs, creating a sense of volume against the plain background. The subject holds a staff in his right hand, while his left arm is raised, a pose that tests the draughtsman's ability to depict foreshortening and tension in the shoulder and bicep. The facial expression is focused, reflecting the disciplined nature of the academic exercise.
Kamphuijsen demonstrates a clear grasp of Neoclassical ideals, prioritising clarity of form and anatomical accuracy. The drawing serves as an example of the rigorous standards maintained by art academies during this period. The inscription includes the artist's name and the date in Roman numerals, confirming its provenance as a prize-winning submission. This print offers a view into the pedagogical methods of the era, where the study of the nude model formed the foundation of artistic education. The clean composition and technical control make this a representative piece of late eighteenth-century Dutch academic drawing.
