A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Johannes Visscher depicting a rural encounter between two herdsmen, their livestock, and a dog.
This etching by Johannes Visscher captures a quiet moment of rural life during the Dutch Golden Age. The composition depicts two figures, one on foot and one on horseback, engaged in conversation along a path. A cow stands beside the pedestrian, while a dog trots nearby, adding a sense of movement to the scene. Visscher, a member of a prominent family of engravers and printmakers in Haarlem, demonstrates his technical skill through the varied line work used to define the textures of the animals, the foliage, and the distant mountainous terrain.
The print reflects the period interest in pastoral subjects, which were popular among collectors for their depiction of everyday life in the countryside. Visscher employs a range of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to create depth and shadow, particularly in the dense foliage to the right and the figures themselves. The artist's signature, 'Visscher fecit', appears in the upper right corner, a common practice for printmakers of the seventeenth century to assert authorship of the plate.
Unlike the more dramatic history paintings of the era, this work focuses on the mundane interactions of rural workers. The light source appears to come from the left, casting soft shadows and providing a sense of volume to the cow and the riders. The open space in the background suggests a wide, expansive environment, typical of the Dutch approach to rural imagery. This print offers a glimpse into the artistic output of the Visscher family, whose workshop was central to the production and distribution of prints across Europe during the mid-seventeenth century. It remains a clear example of the technical precision and thematic focus characteristic of Dutch printmaking from this period.
