A still life by Scottish Colourist Samuel Peploe, featuring a white rose in an oriental vase surrounded by ripe apples. The painting showcases Peploe's expressive brushwork and harmonious colour palette.
Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) was a Scottish artist known for his post-impressionist still lifes and landscapes. As a leading figure of the Scottish Colourists movement, Peploe, along with John Duncan Fergusson, Francis Cadell, and George Leslie Hunter, sought to bring a new sense of colour and form to Scottish painting, influenced by French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Peploe's work often features bold brushstrokes and a simplified approach to form, emphasising the interplay of light and colour. 'Still Life. Apples and a White Rose in an Oriental Vase' exemplifies Peploe's mature style. The composition centres on a white and blue oriental vase holding a single white rose. The vase is surrounded by a collection of ripe apples, some arranged in a white bowl, set against a backdrop of muted greens and blues. Peploe's brushwork is loose and expressive, capturing the textures and forms of the objects with a sense of immediacy. The colour palette is restrained yet harmonious, with the reds and yellows of the apples contrasting against the cool tones of the vase and background. The painting demonstrates Peploe's skill in creating a balanced and visually engaging composition from everyday objects.
