An early Cubist still life by Moïse Kisling, featuring a collection of fruit and ceramics rendered with geometric precision and an earthy palette.
Moïse Kisling, a Polish-born painter who settled in Paris, produced this work during his early period in the Montparnasse district. The composition reflects the influence of the Cubist movement, which was then transforming the visual language of European art. Kisling employs a structured approach to form, breaking down the objects on the table into simplified, geometric volumes.
The arrangement includes a large red ceramic vessel, a wooden bowl containing fruit, and a cluster of apples. To the right, a framed picture displays a fragmented, semi-abstract figure, a common device in early twentieth-century avant-garde painting to explore the relationship between the depicted object and the space it occupies. The palette consists of earthy tones, including ochre, terracotta, and muted blues, which ground the composition despite the analytical treatment of the subjects.
Kisling is often associated with the School of Paris, a group of international artists who gathered in the French capital before the First World War. While he later became known for his portraits and nudes, this early still life demonstrates his engagement with the formal experiments of his contemporaries. The brushwork is deliberate, focusing on the weight and volume of the fruit and the ceramic surfaces rather than atmospheric effects. The inclusion of the framed image within the painting adds a layer of self-referential complexity, suggesting a dialogue between different modes of representation. This print captures the specific texture of the original oil paint, preserving the artist's early exploration of spatial depth and geometric simplification.
