Description
A still life painting by Samuel Peploe, featuring roses, fruit, and decorative objects. The work exemplifies Peploe's use of colour and form, characteristic of the Scottish Colourists movement.
Samuel Peploe (1871-1935) was a Scottish artist, known as one of the four Scottish Colourists. These artists were inspired by Post-Impressionism and Fauvism, movements that emphasised bold colour and simplified forms. Peploe's work often features still life subjects, as well as landscapes from his travels. He developed a distinctive style characterised by strong brushwork and a focus on the interplay of light and colour. This still life painting presents a composition of roses, fruit, and decorative objects arranged on a tabletop. The roses, rendered in soft pinks and whites, are placed in a vase decorated with blue motifs. Oranges sit in a white bowl and beside the vase, adding a complementary colour to the composition. The background is a deep blue, which contrasts with the lighter tones of the foreground. Peploe's brushstrokes are visible, adding texture and depth to the painting. The arrangement is simple, yet the use of colour and form creates a visually engaging image.
