A powerful depiction of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocky coast of Belle-Ile, captured by Claude Monet in 1886.
During the autumn of 1886, Claude Monet spent several months on the island of Belle-Ile, located off the coast of Brittany. This period marked a shift in his approach to the sea, as he moved away from the calmer waters of the Seine to document the raw, untamed power of the Atlantic Ocean. The weather conditions on the island were notoriously difficult, often forcing the artist to work in high winds and rain to capture the fleeting effects of light and motion.
In this work, Monet focuses on the collision between the turbulent sea and the jagged rock formations characteristic of the Breton coastline. The composition is dominated by the movement of the water, rendered through short, rapid brushstrokes that convey the energy of the crashing waves. The palette is restricted to cool blues, greys, and earthy browns, which reflect the atmospheric conditions of a storm. By applying paint in thick, layered textures, Monet creates a sense of physical depth and tactile quality that mimics the spray and foam of the ocean.
Unlike his earlier, more serene depictions of water, this painting prioritises the visceral experience of the elements. The rocks appear as dark, solid anchors against the chaotic motion of the sea, providing a contrast between the permanence of the land and the constant flux of the tide. Monet's ability to observe and record these rapid changes in light and weather remains a defining characteristic of his practice during this decade. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, allowing for a close examination of the artist's technique and his response to the rugged environment of the French coast.
