Two archival photographic studies of the Rue Fesch in Ajaccio, Corsica, captured by Dutch artist Théodore van Lelyveld.
This archival document presents two distinct photographic studies of the Rue Fesch in Ajaccio, Corsica, captured by the Dutch artist and ethnographer Théodore van Lelyveld. The images are mounted on a grid-lined page, typical of personal travel albums or field journals from the early twentieth century.
The upper photograph employs a high-contrast approach, utilising the deep shadows cast by the narrow, tall buildings to frame the sunlit path ahead. The composition draws the eye toward the centre of the frame, where a solitary figure stands in the distance. The texture of the stone walls and the uneven pavement are rendered with clarity, providing a sense of the physical environment of the Corsican capital.
The lower photograph offers a softer, more atmospheric perspective. The exposure is lighter, creating a hazy quality that obscures some of the finer details of the architecture while emphasising the verticality of the street. Figures are visible in the mid-ground, providing a sense of scale and daily activity within the urban corridor.
Van Lelyveld, known for his extensive documentation of cultural practices and environments, approaches these street scenes with an observational eye. Rather than seeking picturesque vistas, he focuses on the vernacular architecture and the spatial experience of the narrow thoroughfares. The inclusion of these prints within a bound volume suggests they were part of a larger project of visual record-keeping. These photographs offer a glimpse into the historical appearance of Ajaccio, documenting the interplay of light and shadow within its dense urban fabric. The presentation on graph paper highlights the analytical nature of the artist's work, treating the street as a subject for study and documentation.
