A graphite study of two boats by Dutch artist Willem Bastiaan Tholen, capturing the quiet character of maritime life with minimal, expressive lines.
This study by Willem Bastiaan Tholen captures the essence of Dutch maritime life through a direct, observational approach. Tholen, a member of the later generation of the Hague School, frequently turned his attention to the waterways and vessels that defined the coastal regions of the Netherlands. His work often prioritises the atmospheric quality of light and the structural integrity of his subjects over rigid detail.
In this graphite sketch, the artist presents two distinct boat studies on a single sheet. The primary focus is a larger vessel, rendered with careful attention to the curve of the hull and the verticality of the mast. The second, smaller boat appears in the upper right, providing a sense of scale and movement. Tholen uses a light, rhythmic line to suggest the texture of the wooden hulls and the gentle ripples of the water. The composition is sparse, allowing the negative space of the paper to represent the open air and the quiet stillness of the harbour.
Tholen was known for his ability to capture the character of a boat with minimal strokes. His technique here is unpretentious and functional, reflecting the habits of an artist who spent much of his time working en plein air. By focusing on the essential forms of the rigging and the weight of the boats in the water, he conveys a sense of authenticity. This print offers a glimpse into the preparatory process of an artist deeply connected to the maritime traditions of his home country. It is a quiet, contemplative piece that suits spaces where a minimalist or nautical aesthetic is desired.
