A technical masterpiece from 1649, this engraving by Claude Mellan is composed of a single, continuous line that spirals from the nose to form the face of Christ.
Claude Mellan produced this engraving, known as the Sudarium of Saint Veronica, in 1649. It is a technical achievement in the history of printmaking. The entire image consists of a single, continuous line that begins at the tip of the nose of Christ. This line spirals outward, varying in thickness and spacing to create the necessary shadows and contours of the face. By manipulating the pressure of the burin, Mellan achieved a range of tones without the use of cross-hatching or multiple strokes.
The subject depicts the face of Christ as it appeared on the veil of Saint Veronica. The expression is one of calm suffering, framed by a crown of thorns. Below the image, the Latin inscription reads: 'FORMATVR VNICVS VNA', which translates to 'Formed by one, one [line]'. This serves as a direct reference to the artist's singular method. The composition is symmetrical and frontal, drawing the viewer into a direct encounter with the subject. The background remains largely empty, allowing the focus to rest entirely on the modulation of the line.
Mellan spent time in Rome, where he studied the works of Italian masters. His approach to engraving moved away from the traditional methods of his contemporaries. Instead of building form through layers of lines, he relied on the swelling and tapering of a single thread of ink. This print remains a primary example of his mastery over the copper plate. It is a study in economy and precision, demonstrating how a complex image can emerge from a simple, singular action. The work is held in several major museum collections, including the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where it is studied for its unique technical execution.
