A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, capturing a sudden summer rainstorm over the Shin-Ohashi Bridge in Edo.
This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The composition depicts the Shin-Ohashi Bridge crossing the Sumida River during a heavy downpour. Hiroshige employs a stark, diagonal perspective to guide the viewer across the wooden structure, while the vertical lines of rain create a visual barrier between the foreground and the distant, muted bank.
The figures on the bridge are rendered in hurried postures, their bodies angled against the elements. Each individual carries a straw hat or umbrella, providing small splashes of yellow and black against the pale timber of the bridge. Below, a lone boatman navigates the river, his small craft appearing fragile against the vast, dark water. The use of bokashi, a technique involving the manual gradation of ink on the woodblock, is evident in the deep blue sky, which transitions from a dark tone at the top to a lighter shade near the horizon.
This work demonstrates the artist's mastery of atmospheric conditions. By focusing on the immediate sensation of a summer storm, Hiroshige captures a fleeting moment of urban life in nineteenth-century Japan. The print influenced many European artists, including Vincent van Gogh, who produced his own painted copy of this specific scene. The technical precision of the carving and the deliberate choice of colour palette reflect the high standards of the Ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period. It remains a primary example of how Japanese printmakers utilised composition to convey weather and mood, moving beyond simple topographical representation to evoke a specific sensory experience.
