A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, 'Sugenoya Kuemon' depicts a samurai after committing seppuku. Part of the 'One Hundred Aspects of the Moon' series, it showcases Yoshitoshi's skill in portraying violence and emotion.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a Japanese printmaker, regarded as one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e. His career spanned the end of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji period, witnessing significant changes in Japanese society and art. Yoshitoshi is celebrated for his ability to blend traditional ukiyo-e techniques with modern themes, creating works that are both visually striking and emotionally resonant. He is particularly known for his series of warrior prints and his depictions of ghosts and supernatural subjects. 'Sugenoya Kuemon' is part of Yoshitoshi's series 'One Hundred Aspects of the Moon'. It depicts the samurai Sugenoya Kuemon, moments after committing seppuku. The print shows Kuemon leaning over his sword, blood streaming from his neck, with a determined expression on his face. The background is a dark, swirling mass, adding to the dramatic intensity of the scene. The print is a powerful example of Yoshitoshi's skill in portraying violence and emotion, and his ability to capture the spirit of the samurai tradition.
