A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, featuring a decorative lacquer box and accompanying kyōka poetry.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai belongs to the genre of surimono, a form of privately commissioned, limited-edition print. Unlike commercial ukiyo-e intended for mass distribution, surimono were produced for poetry circles and connoisseurs, often featuring high-quality paper, metallic pigments, and sophisticated printing techniques. Shinsai, a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai, was known for his mastery of this refined format.
The composition depicts a lacquer box adorned with a repeating floral motif, from which a smaller print emerges. This meta-narrative approach, where a print contains another image, is a hallmark of Shinsai's playful and intellectual style. The inner image shows figures in a lighthearted, gestural manner, contrasting with the structured, decorative nature of the box itself. The surrounding calligraphy, or kyōka (humorous verse), integrates the visual elements with the literary context of the poetry group that commissioned the work.
The palette is restrained, relying on soft earth tones and muted colours that allow the fine line work to remain the primary focus. The use of negative space is deliberate, creating a sense of balance between the text and the illustration. Shinsai's work often explored themes of daily life, literature, and the material culture of the Edo period, and this piece is a clear example of his ability to blend technical precision with a sense of whimsy. The print serves as a record of the collaborative nature of Edo-period artistic production, where poets and artists worked in tandem to create objects of aesthetic pleasure for private circulation.
