A view of Suruga Bay framed by pine branches and orange azaleas, painted by American Impressionist Lilla Cabot Perry during her time in Japan.
Lilla Cabot Perry painted this work during her residence in Japan between 1898 and 1901. The composition captures the view across Suruga Bay, framed by the branches of a pine tree and the bright orange blossoms of azaleas. Perry, who was a significant figure in the American Impressionist movement, spent three years in Japan, where she absorbed local aesthetic traditions while maintaining her own painterly approach.
The painting demonstrates her interest in light and colour, typical of the Impressionist style. The water of the bay is rendered in soft blues and purples, reflecting the sky and the distant mountains. In contrast, the foreground features the sharp, warm tones of the azalea flowers. The pine branches create a decorative frame, a technique that reflects the influence of Japanese woodblock prints on her work.
Perry's brushwork is visible and rhythmic, building the surface of the canvas with short, distinct strokes. This technique allows the colours to interact optically, creating a sense of atmosphere and movement. The balance between the cool, distant bay and the warm, immediate flora provides a clear sense of depth. This piece is representative of her period in Japan, where she sought to reconcile Western painting methods with the specific light and subject matter of the Japanese coast. Her time abroad allowed her to experiment with framing and colour relationships, moving away from the more traditional portraiture she had produced earlier in her career. The work remains a clear example of the cross-cultural exchange that defined much of her later output.
