A detailed nineteenth-century lithograph by Franz Hanfstaengl, depicting the biblical scene of Susanna and the Elders after the work of Paolo Veronese.
This fine art print by Franz Hanfstaengl reproduces the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders. Hanfstaengl, a German lithographer and photographer, gained recognition for his technical mastery in translating oil paintings into the medium of lithography. This work demonstrates his ability to replicate the tonal range and textural qualities of the original painting by Paolo Veronese.
The composition follows the traditional depiction of the scene. Susanna is positioned in the foreground, her form rendered with soft modelling that contrasts with the architectural elements surrounding her. To the left, the two elders peer from behind a stone balustrade, their expressions providing a narrative tension. The background features a classical garden setting, complete with a stone statue and a fountain, which adds depth to the scene. Hanfstaengl uses a wide range of greyscale values to define the drapery of Susanna's garments and the solid mass of the stone structures.
As a lithograph, this piece reflects the nineteenth-century interest in disseminating classical and Renaissance art to a wider audience. Hanfstaengl was instrumental in the development of high-quality reproductive printmaking in Munich. His work often focused on the Dresden Gallery collection, where he produced numerous lithographic copies of Old Master paintings. This print captures the precise draughtsmanship and balanced composition characteristic of his output. The attention to detail, from the texture of the stone to the folds of the fabric, illustrates the high standard of craftsmanship associated with his studio. This print offers a window into the methods used to document and share European art history before the widespread adoption of photographic reproduction.
