A refined portrait of the deity Tenjin by the Japanese master Nagasawa Rosetsu, featuring delicate ink and colour work on silk.
Nagasawa Rosetsu, a student of Maruyama Okyo, produced this depiction of the deity Tenjin. The figure is shown in a standing pose, dressed in traditional robes that suggest a scholarly or aristocratic status. The artist employs a restrained palette, focusing on the subtle lines of the garments and the expressive facial features of the subject. A delicate branch of plum blossoms, a symbol associated with Tenjin, is held by the figure, providing a point of visual interest against the neutral background.
Rosetsu is known for his technical versatility and his ability to shift between precise, controlled brushwork and more spontaneous, eccentric styles. In this work, the focus remains on the clarity of the figure. The composition is balanced, with the vertical orientation of the scroll dictating the placement of the subject. The ink lines are fine and deliberate, defining the folds of the fabric and the contours of the face with precision. The use of colour is sparing, applied to the robes and the floral element to draw the eye without overwhelming the overall design.
This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the late Edo period, where the study of historical and religious figures remained a common subject for painters. The work demonstrates the artist's capacity for portraiture that balances traditional iconography with a clear, readable style. The silk support provides a soft texture that complements the ink work, creating a harmonious appearance. As a representative example of Rosetsu's output, it offers a view into the technical standards of the Maruyama-Shijo school, which prioritised observation and a refined approach to traditional subjects.
