A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei, capturing the dramatic intensity of kabuki actor Ichikawa Danzō IV in a signature role.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danzō IV in the role of the villainous Ono Sadakurō. Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, became known for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which often captured the intensity of the stage through exaggerated facial expressions and dynamic poses. This work belongs to the tradition of the Katsukawa school, which moved away from the idealised beauty of earlier ukiyo-e artists to focus on the specific, recognisable features of individual performers. The composition is vertical, typical of the hosoban format used for solo actor portraits. The figure of Sadakurō is presented with a sense of tension, his body angled to suggest movement or a pause in a dramatic scene. The artist employs a limited, muted palette, relying on the contrast between the dark, patterned leggings and the lighter tones of the kimono to define the form. The background is minimal, suggesting the architectural elements of a stage set without providing unnecessary detail, which keeps the focus entirely on the actor's performance. Shun'ei's line work is precise and controlled, characteristic of the late eighteenth-century printmaking style. The actor's face is rendered with a sharp, angular quality that conveys the character's ruthless nature. The inclusion of the bow and sword further identifies the role, as Sadakurō is a character often associated with banditry and betrayal in the classic play Kanadehon Chūshingura. This print offers a glimpse into the theatrical culture of Edo-period Japan, where the popularity of kabuki actors rivalled that of modern celebrities. By capturing a specific moment of performance, the artist preserves the ephemeral nature of the stage, providing a record of both the actor's physical presence and the stylistic conventions of the period.
