An early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I, depicting kabuki actors Ichikawa Monnosuke I and Tamazawa Rinya.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I depicts the kabuki actors Ichikawa Monnosuke I and Tamazawa Rinya. Produced during the early eighteenth century, the work belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on the portrayal of popular performers from the Edo period theatre scene. The Torii school, to which Kiyomasu I belonged, held a close association with the kabuki theatres of Edo, often producing promotional prints that functioned as advertisements for specific plays or actors.
The composition employs the characteristic bold, calligraphic line work associated with the Torii style. The figures are positioned beneath a flowering branch, their forms defined by strong outlines and a limited colour palette of muted ochre, black, and orange-red. The actors wear large, conical hats, a common trope in theatrical depictions of travellers or disguised characters. Their garments feature distinct mon, or family crests, which allow for the identification of the specific actors portrayed. The flat treatment of space and the emphasis on the rhythmic flow of the robes are typical of the early Ukiyo-e aesthetic, which prioritised graphic clarity over three-dimensional realism.
Kiyomasu I was a central figure in the development of the Torii school, following the work of his predecessor, Torii Kiyonobu I. His prints often exhibit a robust energy, capturing the stylised gestures and dramatic presence of the kabuki stage. The paper retains the aged, warm tone characteristic of early woodblock impressions, providing a sense of the material history of the object. This print offers a view into the visual culture of the Genroku era, where the theatre and the print market were inextricably linked, providing audiences with mementos of their favourite performers.
