Description
This tempera on panel by Filippo Lippi depicts the biblical scene of the Adoration of the Magi. The circular composition is filled with figures, animals, and architectural details, rendered in a rich palette of reds, blues, and golds.
Filippo Lippi (1406-1469) was an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance. His work includes frescoes, panel paintings, and altarpieces, often featuring religious scenes and figures. Lippi's style is characterised by its delicate lines, graceful figures, and use of colour to create a sense of depth and realism. He trained artists such as Sandro Botticelli. His personal life was unconventional; he eloped with a nun, Lucrezia Buti, who later became the mother of his son, Filippino Lippi, also a painter. 'The Adoration of the Magi' depicts the biblical scene of the three wise men visiting the infant Jesus. Set within a circular frame, the composition is densely populated with figures, animals, and architectural elements. The Virgin Mary is seated with the Christ Child, while the Magi kneel before them, offering gifts. The background includes a ruined building, a procession of figures, and a rocky landscape. A peacock and other birds perch on the roof of the stable. The painting's colour palette is dominated by reds, blues, and golds, creating a sense of opulence and grandeur. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, and their expressions convey a sense of reverence and awe.
