Carlo Crivelli's *The Annunciation with Saint Emidius*, painted in 1486, is a masterpiece of the Early Renaissance. Crivelli, an Italian painter known for his distinctive style, created this work during his mature period. The painting was commissioned to commemorate the granting of self-government to the town of Ascoli Piceno by Pope Sixtus IV. Saint Emidius, the town's patron saint, is included in the scene to acknowledge his protection. The original wood panel was later transferred to canvas. The painting depicts the Annunciation, where the Archangel Gabriel informs Mary that she will conceive and bear a son. Crivelli's attention to detail is apparent in the architectural setting, the elaborate costumes, and the symbolic objects scattered throughout the composition. The use of perspective and the rendering of light contribute to the painting's realism. The figures are depicted with elongated proportions and expressive features, typical of Crivelli's style. The work is now part of the collection of the National Gallery, London.
