A detailed etching by Charles Meryon depicting the architectural geometry of the Notre Dame Bridge in Paris, rendered with precise cross-hatching.
Charles Meryon produced this etching, titled L'Arche du Pont Notre-Dame, as part of his celebrated series Eaux-fortes sur Paris. The work captures a specific perspective from beneath the bridge, looking out towards the structures of the city. Meryon was known for his technical precision and his ability to imbue architectural subjects with a sense of atmospheric weight. The composition relies on the contrast between the deep, cavernous shadow of the arch in the foreground and the lighter, more distant view of the bridge and buildings beyond.
In this print, the artist employs a rigorous system of cross-hatching to define the texture of the stone masonry and the wooden scaffolding supporting the structure. The inclusion of small figures in boats provides a sense of scale, while the sky is rendered with delicate, horizontal lines that suggest a hazy, overcast day. Meryon often focused on the older, medieval parts of Paris that were disappearing during the mid-nineteenth century urban renovations. His approach to the city was not merely documentary, as he frequently adjusted architectural proportions to suit the emotional resonance of the scene. The print demonstrates his mastery of the copper plate, where every line serves to build volume and depth within a confined space. This particular impression reflects the artist's dedication to the craft of printmaking, showing a clear command of tonal variation through line work alone. The work remains a primary example of nineteenth-century French printmaking, documenting a vanished architectural environment through a highly disciplined artistic lens.
