A detailed engraving by Gérard Edelinck reproducing the central combat scene from Leonardo da Vinci's lost mural, The Battle of Anghiari.
This engraving by Gérard Edelinck reproduces the central combat scene from Leonardo da Vinci's lost mural, The Battle of Anghiari. Originally commissioned for the Salone dei Cinquecento in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, Leonardo's work was never completed and eventually disappeared. Edelinck, a Flemish engraver working in France, utilised the surviving preparatory drawings and copies to reconstruct this dynamic composition.
The print captures the ferocity of the conflict through the contorted expressions of the soldiers and the muscular tension of the horses. Edelinck employs a precise system of hatching and cross-hatching to translate the tonal depth of the original design into a monochromatic medium. The composition focuses on the struggle for the standard, a moment of high kinetic energy that defines the chaotic nature of the skirmish. The figures are rendered with anatomical accuracy, reflecting the influence of High Renaissance studies on the human form in motion.
Edelinck was a master of the burin, and his technical skill allows for a clear distinction between the textures of armour, fabric, and animal hide. By translating a lost masterpiece into print, Edelinck ensured that the visual ideas of Leonardo remained accessible to artists and collectors across Europe. The print serves as a record of a significant moment in art history, documenting a composition that would otherwise be known only through fragmented sketches. This museum-grade reproduction maintains the clarity of Edelinck's original lines, offering a view into the technical rigour of seventeenth-century printmaking.
