Description
The Cairnwell in Perth and Kinross spreads across bright snow-covered slopes, with exposed dark rocks, ski tows and small huts beneath a crisp blue sky and high white clouds.
South of Braemar, this 933-metre Munro belongs to the southern Cairngorms near the Aberdeenshire boundary. Glenshee Ski Centre occupies its eastern slopes, and the A93 crosses the mountain's shoulder at the high road crossing known as the Cairnwell Pass.
The Cairnwell rises as a rounded white ridge above shallow snow-filled folds. Grey rocks break through the cover, and thin lift lines climb towards equipment on the summit. Two small dark huts sit beside a pale route in the lower ground. Blue shadows define the hollows under cream-white clouds, giving the scene the sharp light of a clear winter day.
