A detailed 1727 engraving by Leonard Schenk documenting the coronation ceremony of King George II and Queen Caroline in Westminster Abbey.
This engraving by Leonard Schenk depicts the coronation ceremony of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place at Westminster Abbey on 11 October 1727 (Old Style). As a Dutch engraver active in Amsterdam, Schenk produced this work to document a significant moment in British royal history for a continental audience. The composition employs a wide, elevated perspective to capture the scale of the interior, showing the monarch and his consort at the centre of the proceedings.
The print is structured with a formal, symmetrical arrangement of the congregation, reflecting the rigid hierarchy of the eighteenth-century court. The architectural elements, including the vaulted ceiling and the draped canopies, provide a sense of depth and grandeur. Below the main image, the text is presented in both Dutch and Latin, a common practice for prints intended for international distribution. This dual-language inscription details the date and the nature of the event, noting the order and lack of public disturbance during the proceedings.
Schenk uses fine, controlled lines to define the figures and the textures of their ceremonial robes. The work functions as a visual record of the pageantry associated with the Hanoverian succession. By focusing on the spatial organisation of the abbey, the artist provides a clear view of the liturgical and political theatre involved in the crowning of a British sovereign. The print remains a valuable source for historians studying the visual culture of royal ceremonies during the early Georgian period, offering a glimpse into the formalised rituals that defined the era.
