A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Keisai Eisen, depicting the elegant courtesan Hanamurasaki amidst mallow flowers.
Keisai Eisen was a prolific designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, particularly known for his bijin-ga, or images of beautiful women. This print depicts the courtesan Hanamurasaki, a high-ranking figure from the Tsuchiya establishment. She is presented in a seated pose, surrounded by mallow flowers, which provide a botanical backdrop to her elaborate attire. The composition is characteristic of the late Edo period, where the focus shifted towards elongated figures and decorative patterns.
The courtesan wears a complex ensemble of layered kimono, featuring floral motifs that echo the mallow blossoms behind her. Her hair is styled with numerous ornamental pins, a sign of her status within the Yoshiwara pleasure district. A notable element is the small, framed portrait she holds, which introduces a secondary narrative layer to the work. The use of colour is balanced, with soft pinks and deep blues creating a visual harmony across the surface of the print.
Eisen, a student of Kikugawa Eizan, developed a distinct style that often featured more realistic facial expressions compared to his contemporaries. His work captures the fashion and aesthetic preferences of the urban population in nineteenth-century Japan. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, from the fine lines of the hair to the printed textures of the fabric. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the period, where courtesans were celebrated as icons of style and grace. The print is a fine example of the commercial art production that defined the ukiyo-e genre during its later years, maintaining a high level of craftsmanship despite the mass-produced nature of the medium.
