A refined woodblock print by Yanagawa Shigenobu depicting the courtesan Kotozuru in a traditional Asazuma boat prostitute costume from the Shinmachi quarter.
This woodblock print by Yanagawa Shigenobu depicts the courtesan Kotozuru, associated with the Tsuruya brothel, dressed in the costume of an Asazuma boat prostitute. The work originates from the series Costume Parade of the Shinmachi Quarter in Osaka, a collection documenting the elaborate processions and theatrical displays common in the pleasure districts of the Edo period. Shigenobu, a student and son-in-law of the master Katsushika Hokusai, demonstrates a refined approach to line and form in this composition.
The figure is rendered with a focus on the structural qualities of the kimono and the specific accoutrements of the Asazuma persona, including the distinctive headgear and the hand-held fan. The Asazuma theme refers to a traditional performance style, often associated with the legend of the goddess Benzaiten, which was frequently adopted by courtesans for public parades. The artist employs a balanced colour palette, allowing the deep orange of the hakama to provide a visual anchor against the lighter tones of the upper garments. The inclusion of a circular fan in the upper left corner serves as a graphic element, containing calligraphic inscriptions that identify the subject and the series.
Technically, the print exhibits the precision characteristic of Osaka-style ukiyo-e, which often favoured a more delicate line quality compared to the bolder prints produced in Edo. The composition is flat, emphasising the decorative patterns of the fabric and the silhouette of the figure. This print provides a window into the cultural life of the Shinmachi quarter, where the boundaries between theatrical performance and the daily lives of courtesans were frequently blurred. The work remains a clear example of the collaborative nature of print production, involving the artist, carver, and printer to achieve the final visual result.
