Description

A detailed woodcut from 1507 by Hans Baldung Grien, depicting the crucifixion with expressive line work and traditional Northern Renaissance iconography.

This woodcut, titled The Crucifixion, originates from the publication Speculi passionis domini nostri Iesu Christi, printed in Nuremberg in 1507. Hans Baldung Grien, a pupil of Albrecht Dürer, demonstrates his mastery of the woodcut medium through the use of sharp, expressive lines that define the figures and the surrounding atmosphere. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the crucifixion, with Christ at the centre, flanked by the two thieves. The figures are rendered with a sense of physical tension, particularly in the contorted poses of the thieves, which contrast with the relative stillness of the central figure. Below the cross, the scene is populated by a crowd of onlookers, soldiers, and mourners. Baldung Grien employs a dense arrangement of figures to create a sense of activity and emotional weight. The foreground features soldiers casting lots for Christ's garments, a detail that adds a narrative layer to the scene. The background includes a distant cityscape, a common feature in Northern Renaissance prints, which provides a sense of scale and place. The artist uses hatching and cross-hatching to model the forms and suggest depth, despite the inherent flatness of the woodcut technique. This print reflects the artistic climate of early sixteenth-century Germany, where the influence of Dürer was pervasive, yet Baldung Grien maintained a distinct, often more agitated, stylistic approach. The work serves as a clear example of the technical precision required for book illustration during this period, where the woodblock had to be carved with extreme care to ensure the clarity of the printed image. The inclusion of the text at the top of the page confirms its original purpose as a devotional illustration, intended to accompany the written narrative of the Passion.
