A delicate portrait by Marie Laurencin, featuring her signature ethereal style, muted colour palette, and graceful, elongated forms.
Marie Laurencin occupies a distinct position within the early twentieth-century Parisian avant-garde. While she moved within the circle of Cubists, including Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, her aesthetic trajectory diverged from their geometric rigour. Instead, she developed a signature visual language defined by fluid lines, elongated forms, and a restricted, ethereal colour palette. This work displays her characteristic approach to portraiture, where the subject is rendered with a dreamlike quality that avoids strict realism. The composition features a seated figure, her posture relaxed and contemplative. Laurencin employs a soft, muted range of greys, whites, and subtle browns, which creates a sense of quietude. The figure is positioned beside a table holding a teacup and a folding fan, elements that suggest a domestic or social setting. Her treatment of the human form is stylised, with slender limbs and a delicate facial structure that recur throughout her body of work. The background is handled with loose, atmospheric brushwork, ensuring the focus remains on the central figure. Laurencin was one of the few women to gain recognition in the male-dominated art scene of the era. Her work often explores themes of femininity and grace, yet it maintains a detached, melancholic air. By rejecting the harsh angles of her contemporaries, she established a personal style that bridged the gap between traditional portraiture and modern abstraction. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts and the gentle, lyrical quality of the original painting, offering a clear view of her technical approach to layering paint and defining form through soft contours.
