A late masterpiece by Titian, depicting the dramatic mythological scene of Diana and the hunter Actaeon through expressive, atmospheric brushwork.
The Death of Actaeon is a late work by the Venetian master Titian. It depicts the final moments of the hunter Actaeon, who, having accidentally witnessed the goddess Diana bathing, is transformed into a stag and torn apart by his own hounds. The composition captures the goddess in a dynamic pose, her bow raised, while the hounds descend upon the unfortunate hunter in the shadows of the forest.
Titian employs a loose, expressive brushwork characteristic of his final period. The application of paint is fluid, allowing the forms to emerge from the atmospheric gloom of the woodland setting. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the muted crimson of Diana's garment. This work was part of the series of 'poesie' commissioned by Philip II of Spain, based on Ovid's Metamorphoses. Unlike the earlier, more polished works in the series, this painting remained in Titian's studio at the time of his death. It shows the artist's late style, where the focus shifts from precise anatomical detail to the emotional weight of the narrative and the manipulation of light and shadow.
The painting is currently held in the collection of the National Gallery in London. It remains a primary example of the Venetian approach to colour and form, where the physical texture of the paint contributes to the dramatic tension of the scene. The figures are integrated into the environment, with the forest itself appearing to react to the violence of the event. The work invites close observation of the painterly technique, which anticipates later developments in European art by centuries.
